Language Quiz Instructions

Select your child’s age. If your child’s age is in between the ages listed, opt for the earlier age. (Example: The parent of a 20 month old in question should opt to take the 18 month quiz).

For quiz selection of the child in question who was born prematurely, please adjust for age up until reaching 2 years of the expected due date (EDD).

Note: If your child is exposed to English, Spanish, or both languages, all of these language milestones mentioned would be relevant.

12 Months Quiz

Welcome to your 12 Months

My child will say mama or dada/papa to get a caregiver’s attention.

My child will say 1 or 2 words (such as naming an object regularly, or requesting an action, such as “up”).

My child will regularly try to imitate sounds or faces that I make.

My child will point to objects so that I will notice what they are looking at.

My child understands “no”, and follows simple commands such as “sit” or “wait”.

My child will turn to look to the person speaking (either caregiver or unfamiliar adult) when his or her name is called.

My child will seek my attention to interact (to initiate play, to get wants/needs met).

My child will adjust their mood in reaction to others (laughing if other kids laugh, cry if someone yells).

My child will play “peek a boo” or other repetitive games that involve the child and adult speaking or making sounds.

My child will become upset and try to resist if I attempt to take away an object/toy that he or she is playing with.

24 Months Quiz

My child understands the concept of conversational turn taking. (The child says something and pauses to let you have a turn to say something).

My child can follow several simple instructions that he or she has not heard before.

My child learns to understand words quickly and understands around 200-300 words.

My child enjoys pretend play and uses objects appropriately (such as pretending to stir a pot with cooking toys, a bottle to feed a baby doll).

30 Months Quiz

My child understands “big” and “small or little” and recognizes names of family members.

My child understands the difference between “one” and “many”. (When you tell him or her to “pick one,” he or she chooses one item).

Understands several pronouns, including me, my, and your (“Go get your book,” rather than “mom’s book”).

My child can identify several objects in books or pictures when asked about their function, such as “What can go?” (a vehicle), or “What can you eat?” (a food).

My child can observe what another child is doing and imitate their play (though he or she may or may not play with that child).

3 Years Quiz

My child’s speech is completely understood by familiar adults and by 75% of unfamiliar adults.

My child can answer simple “what” “where””when” and “who” questions.

My child can identify/point to parts of an object (ex: car door handle or wheels of a bus).

My child can follow 2-step instructions that are unrelated (such as “Put away your toy, and get your jacket”).

My child is curious about how things work and listens to me talk about why/how they happen (Is interested to hear about how water boils, or a car starts.)

My child enjoys socializing with other children and can take turns during play.

My child is able to pretend that an object could be something else (a pencil represents a phone, food, or a spoon).

4 Years Quiz

My child uses “a” and “the” / “un/a” y “el/la” (I see a kitty) and “-ing”or “ando/ -iendo” (She is walking/Ella está caminando).

My child can use contractions (Daddy’s) to indicate possession (belongs to Daddy) and other forms of negation (don’t/shouldn’t/couldn’t) within sentences. Or if using Spanish, my child can indicate possession (carro de papá) and express negation (“no podía”) within sentences).

My child can ask and answer questions using who, what, when, where, how and why to gain or provide information.

My child is completely understood by family and familiar listeners and is understood by unfamiliar adults at least 90% of the time.

My child understands words such as “first, next, middle last” when placing items in order.

My child enjoys role playing (such as dentist/mom & baby/cashier, etc).

My child enjoys playing with and cooperates well with other children.

My child asks why/how questions and uses words like “you” or “he” and an action word (“Why do you roll the dough?).

My child understands “before” and “after”, regardless of word order. (After you brush your teeth, put on your pajamas)

My child understands descriptors such as shapes, height, colors, such as “Find the round, red fruit on the low shelf”.

My child follows 3 step verbal directions (such as “Get your coat, put it on, and get in the car”).

My child likes to make jokes and appreciates that non-literal language does not mean what it says (“it was raining cats and dogs”).

My child can tell other children what to do in imaginative play. (“You’re the mom. You’re going to put the baby in the car. You will drive to the store.”)
